“The Floating Petal”

Painting by: Kellie Smith

This is a very significant painting for me.

Ever since I started my watercolor journey, I have always had an inspiration photo to work off of. I occasionally get images that pop in my mind, but I never have the courage to bring them to paper. I’ve sketched a few in my journal but stopped there.

This dusty pink flower with one floating petal came to my mind the other day and I decided to paint for the first time from my mind. The colors and everything are exactly as they were in my mind. It may seem like such a simple little painting but to me this image represents something so much bigger.

I always wondered how artists would paint the things they see in their mind. I have learned that the more you practice any skill, the more your brain re-wires to support you.

I am proud of myself for trying. I look forward to trying again.
